Programs are for individuals with an intellectual disability.

Programs are athlete-centred and based on the needs and interests of the athletes.

Athletes are encouraged to participate to their level of choice within existing programs.

Programs are community based, and efforts must be made to ensure accessibility.

Programs must be of the best quality given the resources available.

Special Olympics is a volunteer based program, the safety and well-being of athletes, volunteers and staff is a prime concern.

Athletes who wish to compete must meet certain minimum standards, including regular attendance and participation in training sessions. No individual will be denied access to Special Olympics programs because they cannot afford financially to participate.
